L’escargote

The new Malley primary school is set within a site undergoing major transformation, shaped by a strong industrial heritage. Designed as a unifying urban infrastructure, the project creates a sequence of public spaces linking the maison paroissiale, the Gazomètre and the park to the wider neighborhood. The outdoor areas prioritize biodiversity, integrated stormwater management and the mitigation of urban heat islands.

The compact building, composed of a school and a double sports hall, provides versatile uses and bright spaces that support learning in an environment designed to optimise well-being. The architecture emphasizes sustainability: a high-performance envelope, bio-based materials, extensive reuse, photovoltaic production and a low-tech approach. The mixed timber–concrete structure enhances prefabrication, dismantlability and the reduction of carbon impact.

Finally, the project enhances the existing maison paroissiale and is accompanied by a participatory approach, making the school a place of learning, gathering and collective memory rooted in its territory.
